Episode 149: Control and letting go

“Human beings come into the world with a passion for control,” writes Dan Gilbert in Stumbling on Happiness. “They go out of the world the same way, and research suggests that if they lose their ability to control things at any point between their entrance and their exit, they become unhappy, helpless, hopeless and depressed” (p. 22).

What would happen if you decided to let go of some of that control? Could you do it?

Episode 147: Power of 3 Leadership with Steven Mays

Steven Mays is proud to have grown up a military brat. After graduating the United States Naval Academy in 1974, he joined the Navy Nuclear Power program. He served on attack submarines, and later went on to a civilian career involving safety and risk evaluations of nuclear power plants.

Through both his military and civilian careers, he ran into good leaders and bad leaders, and when he boiled it down, he realized that there were a few things the good leaders had that the bad leaders were missing.

He detailed these in this short book, Power of 3: Lessons in Leadership, and brings us those lessons today. Don’t let the length of this podcast throw you — this was a wide-ranging conversation that just flew by. Enjoy!
